Does clove relieves toothache?

     How Does Clove Relieves toothache?
Clove contains an active component in it called 'EUGENOL' which is a good anaesthetic. It creates numbness in the area of application thus relieving pain. It also has antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties. Thus it helps in reducing infection and swelling in the surrounding area.

How to use cloves for toothache?

  • Clove oil is simple to apply and works better than the whole cloves. You may easily get the clove oil from any chemist or herbalist.
  • Simply dip a cotton swab in the clove oil.
  • It is better to mix a drop of clove oil into a drop of some other oil like olive oil or coconut oil to avoid irritation. Specially for children do not use it without diluting into some other oil.
  • Gently massage the gums in the area of pain with the cotton swab and keep the swab there for about half an hour or till the pain subsides.
  • Eugenol present in clove oil creates numbness in the surrounding area and the pain is relieved.
  • If clove oil is not available then you may simply keep the clove or it's powder in the area of pain.

Which type of toothache is best relieved with clove oil?

Clove oil works best in pain resulting from gum inflammation or trauma.
Toothache resulting from deep cavities is hardly relieved because the eugenol present in the clove or its oil is not able to penetrate inside the tooth. So it is necessary to get the carious infection removed from the cavities by the dentist.

Uses of clove oil in dentistry

  1. It is used in many toothpastes and mouth wash.
  2. Eugenol is used in many dental cements used for filling.
  3. Zinc oxide eugenol is present in temporary fillings and for sealing the root canal.
  4. Clove oil is also used by some dentists for gum pockets after mixing it with other medicines.
It is important to remember that
You cannot rely solely on clove oil for treating your pain and swelling. It only subsides pain temporarily by creating numbness and to some extent by reducing infection and inflammation. It will 'NOT' remove the infection completely specially the one due to cavities.

You will have to visit your dentist for treatment.
